Lionfish (Pterois volitans) are becoming an exponentially increasing threat to coral reefs and the marine life that inhabits the coral reefs. Lionfish are native to the South Pacific and Indian Oceans and are invading the Atlantic coast and the Caribbean waters.(NOAA 2013, June 13) It is believed that lionfish where introduced into the Caribbean when hurricane Andrew hit Florida in 1992 and destroyed an aquarium which had six lionfish that got washed away into the tropical waters around Florida. Another less likely theory is that they could have been introduced intentionally by somebody who had a lionfish as a pet.(NOAA 2013, June 13) A third less likely theory is that the lionfish were sucked up into ballast tanks of ships traveling from the South Pacific and the Indian Oceans and dumped the water form the ballast tanks in the waters around Florida. Scientists believe that the increase in the amount of lionfish could become one of the biggest disasters in history.(NOAA 2013, June 13)
